Day Five - Journal

Another day watching Hayden grow and change. He is becoming so much more alert each day. Today he had his eyes open so much and he was following people around with his eyes and head. He's still not taking a full bottle so he still uses the feeding tube for part of his feeding, but he did get through about 3/4 of one at his early feeding today! Each day = more and more progress!

I thought I'd spend most of today's blog talking about the Ronald McDonald House because... well, I think it's pretty cool! I have to say this is a pretty amazing organization. Chris and I moved into the house today after being in the hotel for the past week. Not only are we saving all the money from the hotel (RMH is only a $20 donation each night), but they have a great facility that makes such a difference to the families who stay here.

If you don't already know, Ronald McDonald houses provide housing for families who have children in the hospital in a city far from home. Being here for less than a day, you can already tell that this is a pretty special place. Volunteers abound! Each night volunteer groups bring in dinner for the families. Tonight a woman and her friends are providing dinner. They do it once a month as a way to spend time with friends and give to needy families at the same time. When we came into our room, there was a beautiful homemade blanket and several toys all with tags that said "These gifts were provided by volunteeers for your comfort. Please take these home when you leave."

The house has a large kitchen and dining room, about 25 guest rooms, 5 or 6 living rooms with TVs and games, an activity room for kids, a teen room, a library, and everything to make you feel at home. Each guest room was decorated and furnished by volunteers. Our's is an Alaskan theme and was provided by staff members of Alaska Airlines.

Many families depend on this place to be able to be close to their children while they are receiving care. Some people we talked to have been here with their families for over a month.

Anyway, I just thought it was something worth sharing.. something you don't always hear about. Something underappreciated by those lucky enough to never have to use it. Something we're pretty thankful for right now. Of course, Ronald McDonald House Charities depend on donations and volunteers.
